So, it turns out, Brandon has mono - major bummer :( He is trying to use these extra few days off to rest up and recover, but, man -- mono just wipes you out!
I have been meaning to do an update on Brandon. He has lots of exciting things going on these days - even before this latest health-related excitement.
PGY3
We are ever so close to the end of Brandon's second year of residency. Which means we are almost into the third (and final!) year :) Year Three of his program comes with a few perks:
- No weekend call shifts on inpatient months.
- No cross-covering weekend shifts in the hospital during outpatient months, either.
- One less inpatient block.
He won't know what to do with all this free time! .....Yeah right, I'm sure we'll find a way to fill it up :) Maybe with extra naps, for the next few months ;) In all seriousness, the first two years of residency have flown by, and he will be graduating before we know it!!
OB Chief
Another exciting thing coming up - Brandon was voted by his classmates to be a Chief for his third year of residency. He is one of four Chiefs in his class, and he will be in charge of the residency's OB service. He will not necessarily do any extra OB shifts, but he will oversee the rotation each block - creating the shift schedules, acting as a mentor, and trouble-shooting any issues that arise. He is excited for this role and the chance to work with the other Chiefs to improve and strengthen the program. And we are proud of his achievements in residency thus far, and glad for the recognition he has received for all his hard work :)
Antioch Med
But the most exciting thing going on with Brandon right now, is that he has opened a medical practice in Wichita! This means we will be staying in Kansas for the foreseeable future. Brandon and another physician, Dr. Nick Tomsen, created Antioch Med in January of this year. Brandon and Nick actually matriculated into medical school at Iowa at the same time. After the first two years, Brandon paused medical school while he pursued his PhD, and Nick finished up at Iowa and came to Via Christi for residency. He is actually part of the reason Brandon discovered this residency existed and a big reason we decided to come to Wichita! All that to say, Nick is already finished with residency, and he will begin practicing at Antioch next month. The two of them have worked so hard to make this happen, and we could not be more excited to see it all finally come together! Brandon will come on board and start practicing after he graduates next July.
Antioch Med is a Direct Primary Care practice, which means they will carry a much lower patient load (600 vs. 2,500 in traditional primary care), and be able to spend more time and energy focusing on their patients, and also keep costs lower for their patients. It is a really interesting model that is gaining in popularity. Brandon has been passionate about this since he first heard about it back in grad school. I was pretty skeptical at first, as is my traditional role in our relationship (how can you carry so few patients and still make money? if you make yourself available to patients all the time, won't they call/text/email you all the time?). But Brandon has persisted, and as his passion has grown, I have come to see how this practice model will actually allow for better, more efficient patient care, as well as a more enjoyable lifestyle for the physicians.
